I know this little different this year we would very much prefer to have all of you in person and inner Large Gym listening to our band playing listening to our choir sing then head giving you the opportunity to go out and visit all of our wonderful teachers in their classroom pandemic has taken that away from us on many other things so tonight we're going to take a little bit of a different format will talk about that just a few minutes before I get started I do want to take a moment to recognize some people that are can with me tonight on this presentation that like to start first with my administrative team I could do this job without them to join us tonight we have a system principally the shin assistant principal is sopes assistant principal bauske we got you tonight you're going to meet all of our department chairs and I'll hold on there and reductions until we get to that portion of the presentation and also going to need some significant parents that we couldn't work without or do without them ageism also as we get to that portion of the program so right now we're going to start with some welcoming comments from our superintendent from our board president and former asp what is Gasolina Pride tradition honor where it loudly we're probably say that again yeah that's a Gabrielino eagle keep your head up no message selected am I guess what others fly weed store we may not all be the same at the end of the day I am Gabrielino San Gabrielino high and Gabrielino I am Gabrielino I'm definitely no I am going to lie no and governmental I am Gathering I am Gabrielino we are and so are you students parents and families I'm dr. Gary Scott I'm the board president for the education San Diego Unified School District and I'll be half of all of the members of the board it's my honor and privilege to welcome you to this very important meeting none of us has to be told that we are in extraordinary circumstances right now we are now forced to completely redone Durst and our lives and that means school as well in our district thousands if not tens of thousands of hours combined a gun into developing strategies and opportunities for our students to continue the rich tonight is you here what's proposed and how things are going to be operated I'm sure you two try to put aside any biases that you might have about what your expectations are what you eat right now we have to develop and deal with realities Where We Are thank you for this is a situation where it's going to take all of us going to take everybody to make this work so I asked for your open mind I asked for you to write down your questions and take the time to communicate with your school site with your school principal with your teacher and a few satisfaction please communicate with the district office we are all committed to making is robust learning environment possibly can thank you to all of you for good evening Gabrielino parent student faculty staff and administration the superintendent of the San Gabriel Unified School District school year this is the start of a school year like no other we are excited about offering our Virtual Academy a group of over a hundred stakeholders of teachers parents administrators and staff work on our plants throughout the summer to make sure our students came back to school with a rigorous and Roebuck instructional learning experience no the Gabrielino staff has been working long days and nights and make sure our students have the best possible experience this fall I am proud of the effort they have all put in the district is now working on our health and safety protocols for returning campuses when the Department of Public Health determines it is safe for we all know the best learning environment for our students is live instruction teachers in the classroom we believe that our students will be challenged and enjoy the Virtual Academy experience at the district office we are here to help and support our students parents and staff so please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you might have we are all in this together and we will all get through this together I look forward to hearing about our amazing students in their accomplishes accomplishments this year at Gabrielino high school thank you and enjoy the presentation thank you everyone for their patients and I think dr. Scott's words were arrived on when he said that we need to kind of go with the flow and and adapt to this new situation also want to mention of the ASP video that is and I really enjoy seeing that because he reminds me of how much I miss the students I do come into work every day and being here at school without students a really strange like to be in to be in school and I work his glasses that there's no one here there's no winner play there's no excitement in a year we could not do the work that we do here karolina without this or a parent organizations and tonight we have the honor and the privilege of hearing from some of our parents Representatives that's what this point ledge energies rpcs a president was Vivian Tate hello thank you Sharon and Deborah your parents for letting PTSA take a few minutes tonight my name is Vivian Tate on your 20-21 PTSA president welcome to a new year this is an exciting and it still is but it's very different and I know for my son who's in the 11th. It's always been a time to reconnect with school and friends after the summer and start fresh with the new school year because it's so different we're all trying to figure out how to make this work for our students our families and ourselves and I am really glad to be part of the Gabrielino family with a ministration in the teachers have been working so hard to me everything is smooth and effective is possible GTA SA is here to support you and keep you connected it's so important at this time when we're all feeling a bit more distance than we're accustomed to distance one of the ways pgsa is hoping to keep the connection with our families is regular email updates last year before the pandemic we were keeping you informed with our weekly emails and when there was so much when there was so much going on with extracurriculars and events Midland School closed we moved to a roughly bimonthly distribution during the Spring and Summer and now we're we're back now that we have more in for and so other ways to keep you connected and why don't we go to the next Slide the board members that are on here really wanted to show you the third slide which has how you can connect with us so one of the ways is our Gabrielino PTSA website and its Beverly no ttsa. families that we're proud of our senior scholarship program and if your child is a senior this year that they remember also so that they can get eligible to apply for that scholarship in the spring so teachers and families I am Paula Mark the president of rjhs athletic boosters this is our board for this new year as you can see we have an open position in the secretary position and if you would the board right now have seniors as I do my my last child my fourth one who is booby graduating in the spring so I won't be here after this year so I encourage parents and Buddy please join us join I'll think about it looks like we have a membership dues in different levels that we would like you to consider and with your membership dues we only support different activities on campus that are related to sport so we do have end-of-the-year scholarships so I really encourage our seniors to join because in order to get a scholarship you must be a member of boosters also your funds go towards sports equipment Championship banners that you see in the sky you and a lot more so please join us the register there is also more information and registration information at the ghs website and if you go into the parent resources you can find athletic boosters link there with more information and you can also send us an email we are also other we don't have any sports at this time for fall and I know my son said to that we don't have school live do have sports hopefully if the state allows food and on cif-ss guidance and our school district says it's okay we will look forward to having Sports once again spring that is my hope and if you join I would really love to meet all of you and in person so it's something to look forward to and I thank you for this time and look forward to seeing you thank you Paula I miss Paula said we are really hoping to have Athletics come back in the spring in the winter and spring CIF has taken the three seasons and condensed it down into two seasons so that they will be busy as we have all of our teams can seasons of Blade rather than the three but Impala thank you and for all those I hope it was just gets to our school thank you so much Miss Allison to Brent she is the president of Singapore Education Foundation or Steph give me notice that has been instrumental in assisting avelina with many programs most of you are familiar with the Naviance program which is critical for our students and therefore you're planning their High School career that they can search Naviance taken to a strengthsfinder is just a wealth of information within Naviance her or let her go through Naviance so very very pleased with that program they have supported our band or choir and they're just very much a friend of Gabrielino High School thank you thank you for the kind right gum yes I'm the president of San Gabriel Educational Foundation better known as stop exciting adventure of virtual learning online has begun and I'd like to thank the administrators and the teachers and the staff of the district who have helped to make the transition to Virtual learning as smooth as possible as a community we will continue to grow learn and Thrive together as an organization Seth will continue to focus on impact into the Falstaff will continue to create resources and clay great with our Community Partners to bring you our stuff's resource guide of which serves as a convenient document for online programming that will help benefit students during virtual learning we also will bring to you next adult Workshop series understanding stress and anxiety in children on stuff is probably partnered with the LA County Department of Mental Health to deliver this Workshop one will be in Spanish on September 23rd the other in English on September 30th and as I was saying stuff will also continue the Naviance program which is a comprehensive College and Career Readiness form for high school where they have a chance to create a four-year course plan build their resume manage college application deadlines all within this program also allows the counselors to share Mason I'm with the students in the parents about meetings events scholarship opportunities and any other resources that evolve around College and Career Information we continue our 20/20 giving and this is how you can help I'm all you need to do is visit the stuff website at stuff for 8 schools.org to make your tax-deductible donation of $20 or more today if collectively it's a dollar donation has received on behalf of each day through 12 student in the district there department Sierra cavallino High School as mentioned earlier the very start of this presentation that she was a little bit of a different format so we are going to have each of our department chairs speech you about the department will share the courses in their Department the teachers the resources in textbooks the grading policy and assessments if you have any questions are specific to your child's class please contact that teacher individual I love you permission you need tonight will be covered in this presentation but again you may have specific questions and please reach out to your child's teacher for those questions and now I'd like to introduce our department chair for the English Department this Kathleen Gomez hi everyone first I want to present the English Department at some point your child is going to have any one of these teachers and this is a department that has all the students right now Alyssa I'm take a look at what the course overview and are grading policies are so you're going to see first that we offer integrated English these are our regular English classes classes are offered for 9th to 12th graders are these classes and meet graduation requirements and also a through G requirements when your children are ready to apply for college we also offer designated English these classes are set up for ELD students and they also are part of their graduation requirements the grading categories that these courses follow are here we list all of the so mean to students are expected to practice so we teach Reading Writing listening and speaking on throughout our courses you're also going to see that we have curse warning these are our assassin are classes next are honors and AP courses you're going to notice that we offer honors for 9th and 10th grade and we also offer AP courses for 11th and 12th graders if you have specific questions about these courses you can contact the teachers directly next line now text books and novels are really important in this class to know that students were given a collections textbook this is a hardcover textbook and we're in the process of getting are ebooks ready but that means is the students will be able to access their textbooks online when are AP classes all students received a text book and they all have various novels that they read throughout this the year the requirements are families need to be aware of include a student uninor sdusd account at all times this will give students access to their Google classrooms I'm in your Google classrooms you're going to get information about Zuma town and you're also going to see that our department requires that students use turnitin. every student I got really knows expected to users from the beginning of 9th grade until they graduate big Miss Gomez analogy reduce the department chair for math mystery George song I'm leaving everyone for 23 years and I'll be 40 it's Friday so this year and this year I will have spent half of my life and Gabrielino in wonderful that he wanted to find out in the math department Miss Kauai new teacher to Gabrielino she's new to the teaching profession so she has less than one year of experience but she has ideas and all the technology so she's been a blast and then I also like to highlight mr. Ivan Tang in one year with us but I think 16 years at Jefferson Middle School diving tank is not with us and then everyone else has been Catalina for a while now and the next likely math courses we offer 10 courses in the math department and that includes a regular courses honors courses AP course horses on the left Albert Readiness Algebra 1 geometry course is geometry if you have a son or daughter in algebra to the next course is precalculus have various paths that lead to them before example a student in algebra this year could take pre-calculus next year you can also take statistics next year or even 8 p statistics next year so the questions on the right if you want more info as another example calculus you can take any one of the five courses on the right and so digital resources every course every Math course that would feature digital resource we have what's called Big Ideas Math bigideasmath.com and it has a lot of tools when I assign homework and I can sign it electronically and so students would do the problem and chew their answers into the computer and the song the software will let them know how they're doing a digital assistant will be well I also teach calculus and a resource in calculus is couch at that is it odd numbered solutions for all of y'all number problems and I have to wait for the teacher and and that's it fruit thank you thank you mr. Saint Louis mileage and reduce our department chair for science mr. Tom bielecki leaving your see in front of you half of mork's sign off on the next slide so all of your students will be taking us to science courses on as freshman biology is a required course and on this line you can actually see the three teachers who teach biology you have Miss Mitchy you have mr. America and you have Miss light on honors biology after successfully completes biology the next is chemistry again that is a required course for graduation false Aralia College Prep course on this page you see Mr Cameron on the next page when we get tonight you will see you the other chemistry teacher ball on fingers after these two courses are finished our students have the choice of a number of electors they can look at a science that is interesting to try to go for it so right middle there you can see me McLaren P1 Matt's physics department of physics those are open to another popular course is Anatomy on top by Miss light in mr. America next slide we could see the rest of the teachers in our departments on others who teach chemistry including myself also after you know your first two years of biology and chemistry you decide to take horses like you can buy Apple science AP biology a new one this year 2 is applied chemistry and Engineering courses that are open to our students. courses are based upon the Next Generation science standards ngss on the gold ngss is to really get a deeper understanding of Concepts you make me be seen things done differently than you may remember from school especially when it comes to biology and chemistry on in on in the middle for the middle of the slide you see the phenomenon driven instruction the idea of envious is for students to actually develop and test ideas evaluate evidence really delve deeper into topics then when they have been done in the past students are presented real situations and real data and real evidence and need to figure out what question should I ask about this how can I proceed forward on a really develop critical-thinking it really allows them analyze data in in a very substantial way on all of our classes utilize Google Classroom that's kind of like the main bulletin board that you're going to see to communicate from teacher to student also use Skies so what you will see in styes on my eye this picture there on the side that shows you what the students will review the wonderful part of using this is that it allows for a media interaction so the teachers are able to ask any question and immediately get responses and provide immediate feedback on this works out beautifully in in this kind of distance learning environment but it is something that we use when we are in the classroom also similar to what Mr Solace mentioned for are AP classes we also use AP classroom Stevie's resources there will be others that you will you will see with various other teachers if you have particular questions about a particular, your best bet is to communicate with that teacher and get your questions answered thank you mr. Lucky and I want to social studies with thermistor Marco's in Friday hello everyone welcome parents thank you for making it tonight you have in front of you and slide hear some of course we offer you can see here on the left side of the slide out of courses we offer for a sophomore classes world history on top of the respected, and it's on the right column UC classes offered for a Junior's u.s. History AP u.s. History also taught by respected is there a charming and Miss Monahan their contact information is available there as well and you can certainly contact features individually in the classes we offer as well as government and economics those two horses are one semester courses so you may see at the semester switch our students which books not the same teacher meet you in myself or mr. Steve again plus 20 years of data Leo high school fees also are boys and girls golf coach mr. Harold seen in 20-plus years at Gabrielino high school and he's the other athletic director and then myself and I've been a governess myself on the right side you'll see their courses offered we offer 9th grade physical education and all the 9th graders currently here in these physical education class we offer for 10 through 12 graders coed physical weight training badman fundamentals basketball fundamentals and then for our athletes we have the Athletics courses going getting of next line probably the biggest question I got most of the summer Educators and not Educators list on the world are you going to teach PE virtually and stars an apartment we kind of got together and created our Focus was we felt the need for the best thing we can provide for our students at this point is the removing exercise parks are closed gyms are closed motivation exercise is low so we feel that that's probably the most important thing that we can provide for our students during this Virtual Academy so that's going to be our Focus we're going to provide opportunity we're also going to provide the sum of the accountability for them to do those exercises and those exercises will be supported teachers will be leaving summer workouts will be sharing videos of work and they'll be some written assignments to go along with the workouts next line and then grading rubric grade on a traditional 90 80 70 60% grading scale the point. things are different for the respective teachers but the the grading scales will be the same like the other departments if there are any individual specific questions related to your speed your grades or Peapod you can contact those teachers directly and that would help a lot. Thank you again for coming tonight thank you mr. brummett remove on to the Visual and Performing Arts Department with sperm and Melissa Romero this is Heinrich good evening everyone our priority in the vapid apartment during the Virtual Academy has been to keep students creating and performing in any way possible for RV parts department we're very fortunate to have three awesome teachers who offer a variety of courses all students start out with intro to Art and then move on to the more specialized class all visual art students have been provided materials for their specific class to get them started for the year and we're excited to see what they are beginning to create next flight please in our performing arts classes both of coral and instrumental I'm the choirs marching bands and orchestras are currently all working on visual virtual Ensemble performances it has been quite a shift to move rehearsals to an online studying but the students are mean it happened in both band Orchestra and choir and we can't wait to hear them all make music together again next slide please our job is apartment is also planning a virtual production for the first semester as well drama students are currently taking part in a collaboration with LA Opera that is going to yield a video performance and Cat Ross's Art In Motion class will be part of the LA Opera collaboration as well are speech and debate team is Canby is competing nationally with more he's now the tournaments have all moved to an online platform the Screaming Eagles are looking forward to competing at the Yale Harvard and Stanford Invitational this year in addition to their at league and State schedule just like the other departments if you have questions about specific resources or grading policies please reach out to your students teachers thank you so much thank you Miss Romero now I'm going to turn to a world languages with department chairman Senor Rivera Miss Rabbit very muted Bank of America welcome parents department is made out of what teachers are Spanish teachers and one is we offer Spanish 1 2 AP Spanish language Mandarin 1 2 3 in AP Chinese lantern well I like language class is an elective class it is an important class for our students today because it satisfies the a through G requirement and also help the students incorporate Lane skills into their daily lives resources when we use we use different resources switches novels to deliver content in we have an astrology that is called comprehensible input along with teaching proficiency through Reading and storytelling the way that we grader students he has a lot to do with is based on what students can do with a language how well are scared of thunder how well does Chantix understand how accurate is a student's language how expensive is a full calendar arranged and how is this dance culture and knowledge demonstrated Great Wall sits in a sentence is very depending on the level of the students and is rooted or based on all three level communication interpersonal and presentation and that includes all lines of communication that includes Reading Writing listening speaking the knowledge of culture isn't is based on the essential parts of a language which is all the parts that we need to thank you thank you mr. Now I just special education with apartment tournament Savannah but he still so this is how I Special Education team this year we have a new teacher Tara Mitchell is also new to the teaching profession and so far she's doing an amazing job, my parents are really receptive to her and our students so far are doing great with her so we welcome her this year if you can go to the next slide this year we are servicing currently 146 students with IEPs at JHS and various programs all students participate in school white activities hopefully when we resume and I will be able to attend a sandwich as well as acacian with support on this is a high school, track program students are place in geology Russian classes and we also have student loan place in collaboration models with support from a special education teacher our second program is a special education class also high school diploma or smaller class size hot fire special ed teachers we currently offer English math science and social science and again by a special education teacher mild developmental disability class known as MDD what is a certificate of completion program this is a self-contained classroom they work on functional academic subject they're also mainstreamed into elective classes with a support and they work on community-based integration we also have a severely disabled costs it is a non diploma truck cuz it's also a self-contained classroom they were fun functional academics and it's also on they also work on community-based and depression this year we have more collaboration classes so that's something to celebrate we have to coaching sections for English language arts 10th grade we have three co-teaching sections for ELA 9th grade you have to coach infection chemistry 1 co-teaching Section for bio and to post co-teaching sections for world history and this year we also have a coaching session for US history and two coaching for algebra and when I say operation I mean that this is a collaboration between special education teachers and general education teachers and this year because of the pain dammit we have moved our assessment that are usually done at the high school by special education key and also our school psychologist Natalie Lehman all assessments will be done at the district office so what you see over here in the corner is our director Brian Murray who is currently demonstrating that they are using safety equipment going to be doing assessments at the district office it will be doing all initials and it will be doing all tri-annual and they will be following the CDC guidelines with PE equipment and check-ins and sanitation and some other resources that we also offer Franklin speech and occupational therapy adaptive PE counseling and we're also utilizing our Wellness Center this year thank you ma'am summary sale give me my network career spell education department with Miss Maria Cruz I did eating Eagles and Eagle families now what you see on the slide is a wonderful group of specialized teachers to all offer Gabrielino and unique experience and real world career Industries skills with the exception of 9th grade health and 9th grade transition our students have the opportunity to pursue career pathway programs courses you see there as a construction business Communications drama and graphic design these courses are taken as a multi-year sequence as indicated with the levels 1 and 2 and integrate both and Technical knowledge explain the career options in the industry specifically for building and construction trades business and finance and arts media and entertainment if you go to the next slide you'll see there are resources we will continue to rely on in this online environment and some of us may you still the textbook although there are supplement rule experiences exist or involvement with school that allows students to dive even deeper into investigating their future the last by that we have here is about how we understand the gravity of teaching and learning in an exercise an extra amount of patience and Grace because of it we expect our students to practice and master the content will also learning and understanding that stress of experiencing a school that is fully online grading policy includes to redo and remaster in order to improve and build confidence in their graves and what they understand so we look forward to give back to our school Community as we always have and we're proud to continue to be there for us the future's so thank you everybody for your time I'm done here thank you mrs. Cruz our last appointment of the evening is our counseling department and our department chair is the saint of his Demonte I just want to start out by saying that I know it's been an incredibly challenging time for students not to be able to see us every day and asked them in the counseling profession work mainly one-on-one with our students I'm so we're committed as a department to carry out our duties in this virtual study and so in order to accomplish that we are keeping our normal office hours as we would in person so we work Monday through Friday 7:30 to 3:30 we are available via phone conference virtual meetings using zoom and for students they can also reach us through Google hangouts or Google meet the other important thing I wanted to play what is that you cannot access my phone so thank you to the district and to the admin if you call the school phone number and dial extension you will reach us in our home will come directly to us and so that you can talk with us and this is available to students and parents and stuff well if we don't answer please make sure you leave us a message and we'll get back to you as soon as we can in addition to our counseling we also have our Wellness coordinator on our College and Career Center so our Wellness coordinator is mr. saporito's on many of you already know him he was in our accounting department to work with us so you wanted us to share this message with you everyone Fisher saporito here welcome to another year at Gabrielino high school and for those of you freshman welcome to your first year Gabrielino High School my role on on javelinas campus has changed a little this year I am now the wellness center coordinator the wellness center at the wellness center is actually a new thing enso what is going to be when it's all up and running cuz it's still a little bit under construction is going to be a couple classrooms right outside the library that I am going to set up as a space for a lot of things one of the things that's going to happen there's going to be a space for students like you who may be having a bad day and may just need a place to go for a couple minutes to kind of get themselves back together and have a lot of things going on in that to help you feel more relaxed and more calm but it's going to be an open space for you to come it's also going to be a space where those of you that receive outside counseling going to be the space where that is going to happen are you going to be out on campus in the wide-open or we're in an open space we're going to have a nice private confidential space for you to be in presentation I just a lot of things for you to be able to come in and get some extra support to learn some music really excited about this and I plan for it to all be in place emailed to all students in Naviance tomorrow so the California scholarship Federation it is open to all students at ghs 10th 11th and 12th grade it is based on grades and their point values of CSF assigns for grade students are applying for the great last semester so based on last semester Street in Spring 2020 are there is an application online and a fetus after they fill that out they are going to be at 2 Mister RTA and his email address is posted online under CSS and that says line is by 5 p.m. on September 25th at NHS is the other When is National Honor Society there is a little bit different there is an application as well and they are I'm also based on academics but they also have four other pillar so it's followership service leadership and character the application how they do with the accounting department we go through all the app create a list of those who qualify for NHS and there is a service component I'm obviously in the virtual space is a little bit more morning and the CSF information is correct and the NHS information this is Martinez go back to you we have a question about when should seniors begin asking for recommendation letters yes send has been a Hot Topic so We are following or normal timeline and what I mean by that is we traditionally always meet with seniors in a small group setting at the end of September and in that small group meeting we go over college applications all day Support Services we offer such as workshops and including letter recommendation so a lot of our students I know you're anxious and I already sending out information without having the knowledge of the process and the procedure just want to encourage you guys right now the what should be happening is just thinking about who you would ask for a letter of Rec and wait for those senior meeting before you follow through on the process if we want to make sure we walk you through how to do that what is going to look like in a virtual setting so Jen those meetings will be happening at the end of September and small group senior meetings that's the traditional timeline we've always followed we're not late and and there's you need to get out those letters of recommendation right now at this moment but you should definitely be thinking about who you with not is not going to be affected by the UCS this year so the parent is wondering in the chat chat box it says AUC not sure if that I'm not sure if that's the way you see can you give me information about the SAT and ACT then maybe they're not requiring students to submit an SAT ACT test score of the UC and CSU have gone so far as it's not going to be part of the evaluation process so I know that's difficult yeah we've been telling us they're feeling very anxious I'm sure parents as well because right now there is not a test center to my knowledge that's open in our area for students to take the SAT or the ACT I'm due to the student who did complete either test right now it's optional to send it there is a court case pending my understanding so all the counselors have been attending all the training from the top states and the bottom line is not find it it's not going to hurt the
