NHS - National Honor Society
National Honor Society
National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization affiliated with the National Association of Secondary School Principal (NASSP). Students who qualify as NHS members for sophomore, junior, and senior year are recognized at Gabrielino’s graduation ceremony with a silver cord.
Students in grades 10–12 who meet the requirements for membership outlined by their school’s chapter are eligible to be invited for membership.
Each chapter is required to publish its qualifications for membership, which is based on the four pillars of NHS:
- Per national guidelines, students must, at minimum, have a cumulative GPA of 85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence (Each school chapter is allowed to require a higher cumulative GPA).
This involves voluntary and direct contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.
Applications are open to 10th-12th grade students, one time per school year. Application information is sent to all students in the fall.
In order to be considered for the 2021-2022 school year, students must complete the application and maintain a 3.0 GPA (unweighted). The Faculty Council will review all applications. Students who have are deemed eligible must then show evidence of the community service requirement. In the 2021-2022 school year, the requirement is 20 hours and the NHS Service Hour Log Sheet is due by 3:00 p.m. on May 2, 2022. Please submit your log here: 2021-2022 NHS Service Hours Submission Form.
