NHS - National Honor Society

National Honor Society

National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization affiliated with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).  Students who qualify as NHS members for sophomore, junior and senior year are recognized at Gabrielino’s graduation ceremony with a silver cord.

Eligibility Requirements Students in grades 10–12 who meet the requirements for membership outlined by their school’s chapter are eligible to be invited for membership. Each chapter is required to publish its qualifications for membership, which is based on the four pillars of NHS:

Scholarship: Per national guidelines, students must, at minimum, have a cumulative GPA of 85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence (Each school chapter is allowed to require a higher cumulative GPA).

Service: This involves voluntary and direct contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.

Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character: The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.

Applying for NHS
Applications are open to 10th-12th grade students one time per school year. Application information is sent to all students in the fall.

In order to be considered for NHS, students must complete the community/school service hours forms and maintain a 3.0 GPA (unweighted). The Faculty Council will review all applications. Students who have are deemed eligible must then show evidence of the community service requirement.

Please note that in order to qualify for the year you will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA and complete 10 hours of community service by March 31, 2023. The 10 hour requirement will be issued for the 2022-2023 school year only. These hours should be logged using the linked community service log sheet. Please make a copy of the document to make sure the sheet is fillable. The method to submit the hours will be sent to you closer to the due date for submission. Hours will be chosen at random for verification. Falsification of hours will be grounds to enact the consequences articulated in the Academic Integrity Policy.
