National Honor Society

National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization affiliated with the National Association of Secondary School Principal (NASSP).  Students who qualify as NHS members for sophomore, junior, and senior year are recognized at Gabrielino’s graduation ceremony with a silver cord.

Eligibility Requirements

Students in grades 10–12 who meet the requirements for membership outlined by their school’s chapter are eligible to be invited for membership.

Each chapter is required to publish its qualifications for membership, which is based on the four pillars of NHS:

    • Scholarship
    • Per national guidelines, students must, at minimum, have a cumulative GPA of 85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence (Each school chapter is allowed to require a higher cumulative GPA).
    • Service
This involves voluntary and direct contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.
    • Leadership
Student leaders are those who are resourceful, problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.
    • Character
The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.

Students will be notified that they have been accepted by October 8, 2021.  In order to apply, students had to have completed the online form by Friday, October 1st at 5:00 p.m. Late applications will not be considered by the Faculty Council.

In order to be considered for the 2021-2022 school year, students must complete the application and maintain a 3.0 GPA (unweighted). The Faculty Council will review all applications, and students who have are deemed eligible must then show evidence of 30 hours* of community service by 3:00 p.m. on May 2, 2022.

*Please note that the service hour requirement has been modified for the 2021-202school year. More information about this requirement will be shared once the NHS list for this school year has been verified.
