These materials will help guide students through the process of selecting classes for the fall, so please make sure to review the information.

and a welcome my name is Eva Shannon one of the assistant principals oversee curriculum and instruction at Gabrielino and we're so happy that you're joining us tonight I know that we have are Lunar New Year starting tomorrow so specially for those families to celebrate thank you so much for joining us hours of happy that you're with us we are going through our registration process I'm obviously in the virtual space it will be a little bit different so we want to make sure that all families understand how to help their walk through that process the objective share our big picture Concepts about Gabrielino we want to make sure that you understand its culture traditions and is because that influences how we offer courses and how we offer our counseling processes the other objective is to provide information to our 9th 10th and 11th grade students about next year's course races and registration process our vision statement at Gabrielino if you're not familiar with our school is building on the strength talents and passions of all student our mission statement is can I it's a commitment constant and never-ending Improvement and our school motto is pride tradition and honor little bit of a history of a Gabrielino named Everly no comes from the Gabrielino Native American tribe caught they refer to themselves as a song by so you'll see that a lot when you come on campus or in some of our our our spirit wear and have some characteristics that define us if we have a traditional approach to preserving of the well student we want to preserve a balance between what all students should experience in the unique needs of every individual child and we do celebrate and accept diversity Gabrielino is proud to have a strong academic program we have an award-winning vapa program with a wide range of electives advanced placement offerings here helping program we have a nationally ranked speech and debate program which I'm sure I'll you have heard about we have a well-rounded Athletic program with CIF championships in multiple Sports and we are proud to have a partnership with Rio Hondo College with access for students to go into some concurrent enrollment college classes after school it was Monday I'm in it starts in the spring so we are currently collecting us students course request it will continue in the summer sorry sorry win The Masters read it and that's based on the student's interest and then student received the final schedule with the list of classes that tells you that. And the teacher that they'll have for the year all right that's right students and parents Ocean between a course request versus the schedule classes so if course request is the process that we're going through now in the spring was student expressed to us the courses that they are interested in taking next year is just an interest it is not a guarantee that these maybe the courses that the student ends up with when we start the school year next year and there's a lot of reasons about why that might happen so I'm not going to go through every single reason why of course request what the student want and what they end up with might not look exactly the same but the three main reasons one would be the popularity of the course on our slides we know AP Psychology is very I'm so sometimes we cannot accommodate all the students have interest in that course II would be because there's a conflict between two horses at the student once and they're offered at the same time so get in this example a student wants it Oculus and they want concert choir and those two classes are offered at the same time so that might initiate a schedule change and this third would be that as we as counselors as we were you the requested are coming in if a student is missing a graduate requirement we will make an alteration to this course request if the student is missing a requirement for college and they've indicated that that's her interest we would make a an update for that so August is when the student actually gets final schedule of what they will be taking for this school year so it's just important to keep that in mind as we go through this process so some resources that are available to help you any student Isaac still out there course request we would recommend that you review this information prior to filling out the course request or even have the reference sheet open while you're filling out the request so the first there is reference sheet that goes over our graduation requirements to receive a diploma San Gabrielino are a through G requirements which would be the requirements that are necessary for students to submit an application to UC Cal State your senior year and then the second page of that reference sheet is the list of all the courses that we offer by subject and some more information that will go over and later Slide the counters did create an instructional video that the students have already seen through embedded time it's short 11 minutes and we tried to answer the most frequently asked questions that we receive about this registration process you should have seen it you as a parent can also hope you are on our website and it's available to you again as well for our students were interested in joining an AP and honors course next year. We want them to reference the prerequisite sheet that is bear on number three that will list the criteria that the student must meet to be considered next year for an honors in an AP course and then the very last resource available there is all about the HP program what does that mean what does that entail what to expect as a parent of a student an AP student and so that webinar I believe happened last week so if you weren't able to attend that's also posted on her web site RSO in the springtime how we are collecting the information of the students interest is through a Google form that was emailed to them on February 3rd I'm so that way done during are embedded time each student was asked you to watch the instructional video and then acts as a form that their councillor sent them so they all have access to the forms we understand that students are a lot of emails as our parents I'm so we gave the email a very specific title to help students be able to find that email and the number of emails that were receiving self if they haven't seen it yet they should search for open during embedded time today registration form that's how they're going to finally next week the counters will be visiting I'm all the 11th grade English classes to answer questions after that we'll visit the 10th grade class and be available to answer questions in that class and then when we return from spring break we will meet individually 1014 brief meetings with a knife ways to review with a selected it's also important that the form is due March 25th at 12 a.m. so what does the form look like this is a kind of a sample of something the student would receive the first thing I want to draw your attention to is up here where the form starts we want to make sure the student is accessing the car so a 10 Raiders should receive the 11th grade registration form at the counselor each warm starts by listing the required courses for that grade level so you'll hear you'll see here in our a demo that the 11th grade others who required courses English 3 and us those are the required courses as well because they're marked with the red Asterix the student has to unselect that horse when they're going through this form we tried as best we could to provide helpful information out the form but obviously we're limited and Stacy are so here in this example you'll notice that mess we made a notation there about doubling up there's also a small notation under here for English for students are interested in AP language versus English 3 and as the form continues students are also asked to select alternate so that can that's important part of the form that sometimes students kind of blunt works at the alternate they're very important because again remember the course schedule is just the interest it may not be the final schedule so there is a conflict or change it has to be made you go to the alternate I'm so you would see that at the end so Jen the student should access the form from their counselor it was sent to them via email before already been submitted be opened up again for students to make and the form will be available up until March 25th at 12 p.m. all right so what information does my student need to know more Lookout before solo next year's classes so it's important that students are reviewing if they're meeting their graduation requirements on if they're interested in attending college to indicate their inter scsu a private university or Community College so this information about how to access all of this information and review it was shared with the students how to do this during our Naviance mean happened in the fall so every student was invited to attend so that we could show them how to access this information so they can communicate it with us on it's also important to note that you was parents can also access this in and while we didn't give a direct lesson to you guys if you need help in your your students needs help please reach out to us but they're the requirements you are are are available to every parent and every student Aries and Naviance so Aries allows a student to check their progress towards graduation it allows them to check their progress towards the a through G requirements the way they would indicate there interest in terms of their future College plans would be in Naviance with all students and parents have access to and the way we've asked them to communicate their plans in their intention is by using a future and their colleges I'm applying to time and again you can reference the pre-registration sheet which has all of this information on it and available to you as well alright so one of the things we covered in our Naviance meeting with r students is the distinction between the requirements to graduate from Gabrielino versus the requirements that a college California states of the csu's in the uci's will require I won't go entirely into death about every you're one of the lessons are activities we do with them in Naviance is to compare and contrast the two list and identify the differences and the similarities I'm so I'll point out one to you and I'm not going to do every one but if you noticed here physical education 2 years or 28 units is required and when we look at the list. You are a through G requirements you'll see that there is no physical education requirements listed I'm going to that is not a requirement for college it's requirement specifically to receive the diploma so again it's important that students keep that in mind especially when they're asking questions on some students want to know where the anti-fur graduation or they want to know if they're meeting there a through G requirements and again these are two different reports are available in Aries so you can't just look at the graduation requirements and assume that the union is making that requirements of there is a distinction between the two all right so the course list the Google form is meant to emulate this course list so you should be on the stage Google form the courses that we have available on the disk is it an easier or different way to look at that information is grouped together again by subject so you'll see all the courses that we offer in each sub it gives you information about what grades at courses open to if the title is in bold we know that. Course meets both a graduation and HUD requirements students often want to know about the courses that get the extra points and the GPA calculation so those are underlined and I know it's a little hard to see but the AP English Language that is under find because it does get the extra waited a point in the GPA I'm also English 10 honors does and we made an adjustment on the actual form that you'll see that that would be underlined as well alright other factors to consider When selecting classes for next year the first would be zero. A zero. Means that is is saying that they want to start school an hour before the normal start time some important things to note deal. Is not for every student and not every guy really know is your hoe. We met those decisions in the summer when not master schedule is being created in that timeline that we started off with but the traditional ones that year after year have always been zero. Are Marching Band intro to Arts events Garmin chirp and marching band goes with with concert band I'm so if you know that your student is not a morning person they probably shouldn't register for zero. You also have to consider the commitment that you as a parents are making as well so if you normally drop your student off at school then you're also making that commitment to get the school an hour early every day for a year or if your child walks to school you want to think about you know the how early that would be in and how many people might be out or not out at that time because it is earlier than the normal full-time the other factors to consider it is the request to change the schedule so remember it August the student gets the actual finals schedule they have 1 weeks of the first semester to request a schedule change so it's a quick turnaround but that is the timeline 8 to get one week and anyway plus that don't meet that deadline would result in the student receiving what we call a job sale or sensually an  in the course it's also important to note that you know honors and AP courses Austin we need to work collecting that information now in the spring we submit it to the teachers so any last minute changes or decision will affect a student's ability to get in so that students who are going to receive priority for consider a when are the one to turn in knots submit that Google form by March 25th at 12 p.m. that's that's the priority deadline and so any changes after that may result in the students being waitlisted into the course and it's important again that students understand that there are criteria but they need to meet to be considered and that would be on the AP and honors guidelines and it's just important again to create a good balance between all these AP and honors courses and thinking about what other activities or child may have going on in their life extracurriculars or maybe there in baseball may be there in Boy Scouts want them to create a schedule that they know that they can maintain and that provides a healthy balanced time for sleep time for family time and fun things so again it's important that you was Terrance I look over this Galecki okay so if you and your student are considering advanced placement courses or your kind of already on that track just a few important reminders are the curriculum for these courses is college-level and the curriculum NZ accompany accompanying exam or created by the College Board it is a higher level of rigor C do you want to consider that when making us election the AP courses do not have the same homework protections as the other horses and if they may require some work during Summers and breaks do you want to be thoughtful about if that's something that your student wants to commit the importance of balance sleeping over Wellness Bustamante just mentioned that we do want to caution of families against overloading AP courses I do understand that all of our families who want to make sure that our students have the opportunity to go to the best schools and to have the brightest future been doing so we want to make sure that we are thoughtful of the whole child and making sure the student has balance and really is able to enjoy you know being in high school so please be a Counterpoint to peer pressure competition in comparison I think that is very very hard to navigate I'm it's very difficult for students not to look to the right into the left to see what their peers are doing and try to keep up. It is very important for students to get to know what they are good at what they really enjoy what they're passionate about and we pursue those particular option and again we have the AP program information webinar that happened a couple weeks ago and that type of thing for you here on once you are able to look at this car when on your own in thinking about all the courses for next year's summer school does get wade into that so we want to be thoughtful about a talking a little bit about our options and making sure our families are very clear about what we need to do from now until then to get the course they need and follow the protocols that are in place the one option is Credit Recovery with Bustamante did you want to expand a little bit about that yeah I just want to make sure turn to students understand that the credit recovery summer school that is in the preview of us as counselors us so we will check every student and make sure that they're on track for graduation and if they do need credit recovery and it's being offered this summer we will send the initial notification out to the student and to the parent that they need to register and then from there they fill out the form and then it's first come first serve and there's also no fee for credit recovery so again the traditional courses in Credit Recovery or English math and social science we also have horses for our ELD students are English language Learners think they will be invited to come to summer school as well and again there's not a fee for the credit recovery summer school we also have other opportunities for students the San Gabriel Education Foundation or Seth is afib program and they often the offer get ahead or advancement courses and more information about Seth and their offerings to the summer will be out in the next few weeks and there is also the Jaime Escalante program from East LA Community College and a Gabrielino Doug offer a satellite of that program it is math only the Gabrielino program is going to offer Algebra 1 geometry and Algebra 2 and it's also considered Galahad do if they are a it's students are eligible for this opportunity they've already been contacted by their math teacher do Math teachers should be talking to their students about going to this advancement course so if they haven't been notified if you have any questions feel free to reach out to your students math teacher and I just want to make clear for a family that Jaime Escalante program through elac is it is their own program we just happened to offer a satellite option or program at our school but Jaime Escalante is also available for you and your student should you want to go that route and take courses there so you would have to reach out to that program directly to make sure that they get that app patients admitted at the right time and for you to get information on when that first or the program is going to be offered there is going to be a summer school meeting with the pandemic there have been some alterations is considered consideration that we have to make so we are we having meetings planning summer school but unfortunately we don't have definite information for you tonight but we will put out more information about summer school or offerings and the timeline for your student that we can make sure that you get access to all the things that you need during that during the summer some important notes for summer school student cannot be can currently enrolled into institution so that means that if you are taking the Jaime Escalante program you should not in find another program to get credit this is because the student attendance triggers of funding from the state of California so we really want to be thoughtful about making sure families know about this other one is complete only one semester of a year-long course during summer the student needs to take the year-long course again I got really know so just to be clear if you are taking a class for advancement if you're taking a class to recover you want to make sure that you are taking the full I'm so that you don't get yourself into a situation where you retake that your lungs work because you were only able to commit to that semester of complete that semester during the summer Atlantic Community College courses should only be taken for enrichment so if you're planning to go to PCC or elac to take AAA Community College base course they cannot be taken out to progress in a sequence so they're not allowed the community college courses are not aligned to High School California state standards do just to make sure you understand if you're taking class at Community College it is for enrichment purposes and also when do you want to remind you that any decision to take summer school you need to notify your counselor this helps the counselor build the schedule correctly for the fall so if they are not informed that they would have built it from what whatever they know on the student completed this current school year so please make sure if you have plans to enroll your student in summer school course whether it be Escalante or any other program that you do need to make sure that your counselor is involved in that conversation so that they are aware of how the schedule should be built for the fall additional component forget ahead and advancement courses so it's your student council take a course over the summer to progress the next course in the sequence so the example is geometry taken over the summer so that the student can take Algebra 2 in the fall or another example is maybe the student is taking Spanish 2 over the summer that they can take Spanish 3 in the Fall 2 conditions must be met if your student is planning to do this one I just mentioned the plans must be communicated to the counselor before the last day of this current school year if it doesn't happen in the course in the sequence is not guaranteed so this applies to students who said they want to take a course and then they don't I think that the lesson of that is we just want to make sure that the communication happens with the counselor again so that we make sure that in the fall their their classes or their schedule is correct the other condition is transcript submission so we want to make sure that there's enough time for the students to complete the summer school course and then also obtained the transcript and then deliver that to Gabrielino on this particular last summer we had little bit of trouble with that timeline the please be thoughtful and making sure that the last day of the summer school is completed and you have enough time to pain that transcript and that is submitted to the counselor that we have all of those things in place because that way impact the placement of the student in the fall schedule okay so we have some closing thoughts we will do a little review at the end of the lot of information and then we'll get to our Q&A so you know a lot of anxiety surrounding on the 4-year journey and making sure that your student is taking the proper courses but we want to make sure that you're thoughtful about your child's personality bars if your student has some anxiety if they're not a to wake up in the morning if they really enjoy or they struggle and a challenging environment if they have a little bit of perfectionist Tendencies right all of these things we want to consider these things in building the schedule so that they have a full well sounded good experience we don't want to over stress our students and I think in this environment there is a tendency to look to the right and to the left and to compare and try to keep I think that's the thought and we want to be soft why are our students are unique people and we want to build schedules based on what our students are good at what they want to pursue and what they're passionate about stay with the conversation and stay calm I think that's did a piece of advice do you want to ask your counselor and build a good relationship between your student and the counselor to make sure that this is the proper move forward or this is the proper course that you want to take with your student on that they're going to be adequately challenge with rigor but that it's not too much rigor that the student is going to struggle so please make sure to have those conversations and you want to take the long-term view on College and its relationship to personal success so I think you know if you have a college-going mindset you know that you're looking back yeah there are certain experiences that come with, do you want to make sure that it is both challenging excuse me a good environment and they also able to release Drive in the setting that they're in so please make sure to have that big picture long-term view in mind and you know just a couple of reminders right we do have students that have gone to Harvard there being successful right there doing a ton of work there but then there's a lot of kids who just started at Community College and they're able to save money they're able to transfer to a great school and do really successful things so please make sure to bear that in mind I'm also really easy to have some parrot competition as well I'm to compare where your child is going versus another child and we want to be thoughtful about that as well and make sure that decisions are made for the future long-term success not just you know that 4 years of comparison that happened during High School okay so here are some ways to stay informed we want to make sure that you confirm information that you hear my thing there's a lot of chatter that happened between students I'm sure in the parent Community there's a lot of conversation that happens as well so if you hear something and you want to make sure that that is the truth and that is a good accurate information please make sure that you confirm that with your child counselor your your counselor and the career center counselor on this Jocelyn Machado they are excellent resources so please feel free to reach out to them you also want to make sure to register for the Navien parent account and make sure they student is also staying connected into Naviance there are a lot of really beneficial features on within that program and then make sure your student is tapped into our Daily Bulletin that happened this year weekly in the virtual Space by video and in the fall please make sure to check your student schedule please walk through that and please ask questions if there are any changes that need to be made we want to make sure that they get made as soon as possible so that they get made by that deadline and then we have what are social media links were update their mate as well so that you know about are webinars meetings and any other opportunities that are available for students I know again that was a lot of information at once but I do want to remind you so one of the things is we are doing registration a little bit differently this year unfortunately in the virtual space it becomes much harder to meet one-on-one with every student so I'm please be patient with your counselor the perform on that students have received the Google form for registration the students already have it in their email remember it has that unique subject right over it says open during and Peta time is registration information they can ask start today so they can open that up and we do have some of the resources in tonight's webinar that will be put up on the website by tomorrow morning and you're able to kind of Click through that look through all the information to walk your students through the schedule I'm building that correctly but you know you do have till March 25th at 12 p.m. so if you want to make edits to that once you submit it you can up until that deadline and then again with summer school we will have more information for you and there will be a summer school it's created in the next few weeks to inform you and make sure you have all the information that you need to get your students signed up no we're going to go into the Q&A at this point to make sure to answer any of your questions I'm just not showing my screen okay looks like can you take can you take multiple summer school classes like one from Gabrielino and one from a college did you want to answer that question so yes you can buy those are two different systems that is allowed always want to be mindful of how much work you can handle one important thing not so sometimes parents and students may not know is that a community college or any college record follow you for the rest of your life versus a high school records so whatever grade you receive and not College course dots will have to be reported for the length of your educational career for any college that you made attend in the future so again be mindful of that have summer school usually like 5 weeks of course moves at a very rapid pace and you want to make sure that you can handle both those forces and do well be thinking it's me to Monta the second question is will options for youth summer programs credit be accepted this year yes so options for Hughes is an accredited high school program and we do accept credits from any accredited High School just a reminder to that program I'm specifically because it's not a Gabrielino Pro around we want to just make sure that you are thoughtful about the timeline and that we do obtain the transcript so that we have it in time to schedule your student for the fall courses correctly I got a question is our students able to take a PE class at the community college if so how many credits would they get and which PE classes are accepted Sono remember Community College courses are only for enrichment of PE is a gray Malaysian requirement so that has to be taken to an accredited high school so we would not accept PE credits from a college to satisfy the PE requirement to receive the diploma and just to clarify that further the California states and for high school is separate from the expectations at the college or Community College level so that's why those credits do not transfer so just because we want to be thoughtful any community college class is 4 in we can students take Summer School courses for elective credit yes students can take me much any course they want in the summer again from any accredited high school we will our high school program okay and it looks like there are a handful of questions about the Escalante program so it just didn't get credit for the Escalante is it a full-year course or a semester course yes that's important to remember cuz sometimes get confused right because you keep saying that we don't college courses at those are enrichment courses so Jaime Escalante is a high school program based on High School curriculum that is partnered with East LA College so that's why we accept those credits they are for the the full-year I'm so I need to know one rolled and complete horse would get the full year of credits needed to advance to the next math level okay the next course is also about him Escalante for the program that's satellite incoming 9th graders qualify for that if they plan to take geometry in the summer or do they have to go to the standard I'm a Escalante program so I'm in Escalante a Time Escalante so hot and whether you take it at the side or you take it through Gabrielino so yes we will take whatever I did a student earns through the high masculine to program and there is no distinction made between the one that we or if a parent or student decides to take that course at another campus that is hosting Jaime Escalante or directly at the elac campus SMS messages to clarify that question so if an incoming 9th grader wants to take the geometry course with our satellite I'm Escalante program at job can they do so and how do they do that so so my understanding is the math department is handling that I know that there is going to be a math course as specifically for incoming 8th graders so I believe again that they would receive a notification from their JMS teacher if they're being invited to a tickle my source to Jaime Escalante at our campus and I think the course there is to you can ask mr. Chang at Jefferson I think he would be able umconnect with mr. Solace on our campus I'm to work out that question it just didn't want to take up our next question is are a through G requirements the same for out of state universities good question no not always so the a through G requirements are a good framework most colleges follow those requirements that those are specific to the UC on to the Cal State so we always advised you. I'm more interested in Odyssey School private universities that they need to do their research and look at the admission requirements along with us if they have questions were here to help navigate to help them navigate. Because they're not always exactly the same they're very close but not always exactly the same options for youth can you split a year-long course among two summers so you have to finish it in that summer that you or so for example US history is the year-long course if you come back and you just finished one semester then you have to enroll for the year for the semester you already completed and the semester this current is asking specifically about sign language on for language credits instead of Spanish or Mandarin just so you know I know it went through. Slight really quickly but the language is not a a graduation requirement from Goblin we know it's against specific to just those students who are looking to apply to for University their senior year and so are the language courses that we offered yes or only Spanish in Mandarin but we know there's lots of different languages out there and social student is interested in another language American Sign Language German Japanese Korean they can take that course through a community college and use dots on their color kishin to satisfy a language requirements so we have I think a question about summer school I just want to make sure that were category of your question together so that we're not repeat answering but I think there's a question about the Escalante program so if you go back into the slides and again this will be recorded this is being recorded and this will be a website but the Key Program is in an opposite of the East Los Angeles Community College they provide a program it is math focused and they have a program that is for all students and it's at multiple campuses Gabrielino does have a partnership and we have a satellite program but your child's math teacher because it's for an advancement or get ahead course under chug math teacher will have already invited your student to take the course if they qualify your student does want to access the Jaime Escalante program that is not the satellite program like Everly know they are welcome to do so they will need to seek out that information through elac and then provide you know that information to the council that that is what you're planning to do so that we can make schedule you accordingly football schedule okay so the next question is if students take a community college course over the summer for enrichment is it better for them grade units or pass no pass Independence it's a hard one to end it depends right words I think what we really just want to be cognizant of you know Candice student handle a college horse are they ready for college what course are they taking and make sure that it's at their level on the end of ready for for that child so you know whether you're one option yes is to say that you want to take it for a credit or no credit or pass no pass but it's hard to say what about be more depending on on your students in the course if they're interested in and then again the colleges require our signature so we will see the course if the student is selecting and if there's any issues or concerns we would have dress up first before sign off just so that we make sure that the student is aware of the commitment they're making and again so that they don't run into trouble later on when they do go to college because that college transcript follow you the rest of your educational and I would just add to that you know if you're still unsure and you would like a little bit more discussion on that you know I would reach out to their child specific counselor because we can look back at the transcript to see how your student has done in that specific content any kind of offer a little bit of additional information and insight into that so that the decision-making is is done together expressionism is the PSAT still being offered you're just considering many colleges especially used either ESAT so that's true right we have heard in the last 2 years right that the SAT is being phased out with the UCS but they're opting not to have that consideration for the acceptance is again I think it's going to depend on your students desire or what school they're going to go to right so if they're going to apply to his private colleges do you want to be thoughtful about researching the requirements for that specific University on the use these are not I'm requiring it so if your student is planning only to apply to I'm a child State you you see and yeah you might be want to be thoughtful about not taking it I'm it is still being offered but I know that a lot of things that are closed because of the pandemic check out the College Board website it does have a list of LA County testing sites and then the dates that are offered from now until the end of the school year did announce right there it would be offered yeah and just to explain that we typically offer the PSAT on our campus but because of the restrictions on the College Board was still asking us to I'm conduct the test at school and for sale safety reasons why we were not able to do that to the PSAT is not was not offered I'm at Gabrielino this year okay so will the coming school year, I like this year I think that's a hard question to answer at this point I'm going to save that question for the end because I do want to make sure to talk about koe but it'll bit and appendix I think everybody is you know kind of in this anxiety space of wanting to know so I will address that it in just a few can students take a business Summer Classic job and a foreign language summer class in the same summer if so where can students take the foreign language class okay so yeah is there two different remember we can't be called doubled that they can't be involved in our world in our High School summer program and then another High School summer program at Ray because we get money from the state summer school until the state champions Bowl isn't allowed but if the language summer school classes being taken at a community college then again those are two different systems so. Is but if we're talking about two High School to High School summer programs and know that would not do that again because of the State of California as far as where students can take the college or the foreign language it's it's important to note that Gabrielino counselors right myself we only know about what garbolino offers so we don't really keep a list of what is offered outside of Gabrielino what we can do is any if you have any questions about whether or not the the course would be except we can answer that question for you we don't keep a list of you know every course and where it's being offered in the summer and I also just want to to make a note cuz that's a trend that I seen a starting last year we are taking like two or three courses in the summer and I'm worried about that right summer is y'all so your time to relax and while we encourage students to use that summer school at or that time in the summer I'm either for educational enrichment or you know to do some extracurricular activities or community service I'm not really sure where this is desire or this all of a sudden there's this I have to take three courses in the summer I have gotten a lot of emails then you know I want to take my language and speech all in the summer and then we're talking about five weeks really that the students are going to have so again I I just want to caution students trying to advance to quickly and do much on their plates especially given the school year that we decided to take a little break I think okay girl asked question is under a ghs grad requirements 70 units are required for electives can students take enrichment at the junior college to meet this area I just want to clarify the word enrichment I think maybe there's a little bit of misinterpretation there enrichment is for self-growth so in terms of taking those credits and wanting to put that towards graduation again with call community colleges not able to take those credits and then put them towards High School graduation on the credits that the student will receive will be transferable to college right but it'll be part of your academic transcript as you pursue College but it will not transfer for graduation requirements okay I'll look up Editions are Hands-On or Hands-On classes would work Ceramics on the offer to students and if so how will they be taught online currently there is not a plan to offer specific Hands-On classes like those I think there could be an art classes offered but again I think in terms of specific class offerings on timeline things like that I just want to make sure that I'm giving the right information and we are continuing to meet to solidify those plans for the summer again we will have another webinar and another son parent meeting about summer school so I'm sorry that I can't give you definitive answers about every classes being offered but that will come in the next few weeks here so that we have the right information yeah I mean just Horton stock graduation requirements but there are enough opportunities within the schedule for students who earn that 70 credits of elective I know that you know when I go over this with my students are always worried that so 70 credits us so much and it is what is very easy to get through the courses I got between without having to do any outside Summer School courses okay thank you and then you no thank you to our parent who is it mention that her son is taking a woodworking virtually right now yet we are offering woodworking now and we are offering Ceramics now and our students have done fantastic job of just kind of scrambling and figuring out how to do that in the virtual space especially our art classes are they have worked week after week to make sure materials are available in the front of the school so they are trying to figure out how to do that in the first will space so they are kind of there a standardized test not being looked at College academic rigor and grades on how is God working to prepare our students or teachers are working tirelessly to try to make sure that our students are our have the opportunity have the same level of rigor that they would have had an in-person setting so you know there are limitations to that obviously in the virtual space have never taught in a virtual space before so there's a lot of struggle there but I know teachers and we're regularly checking through all classes and having these conversations with the faculty of our teachers are working to make sure that that same level of rigor is being put in front of our students and and I think it specially of AP classes right there they're working as hard to prepare them so that they can achieve while I see a pee test which are still plan for this spring so you know I think that's a hard question to answer on a broad level but you know we want to dialogue about your specific classes then I'm happy to do that on a one-on-one basis so is there an address again I want to be thoughtful and I won make sure to offer you some reassurance unfortunately I think this year has been a year where you know a security and assurance and definite SAR are kind of thrown aside right it's a different it's a different year different times a different season and I think like no other time before resilience and the ability to struggle through all of this has been at the Forefront but with that we don't have definitive answers so what I can say is that our district leadership is on called with LA County everyday right in on those calls we get update about the numbers and where we are in the cheers right and you've heard this on the news like the purple tiara you know things like that so they are trying to get those updates every day to hear about when we can reopen school if we do reopen schools that webinar that information will go out so I think are super in Simmons right he put out a call at the beginning of the semester I'm letting you know that we do have a hybrid schedule and plants together but unfortunately because of the restrictions were not able to put those plans in place yet we are getting updates and we will inform our community on when that might change in terms of summer school again right this is why we're having continual meeting we don't know exactly what can be offered at that time you're hoping to offer in-person classes but again it's going to depend on the restrictions that the health department and allows us to do we're kind of at the mercy of what they're looking at and then what date was directed that we received from in terms of the fall and I think we're all hoping that we can come to an in-person setting but I think we were at that place in the in this fall right we were hoping that second semester we would already be in person we would be on the way road to free but we just haven't gotten there yet so again I want to you know applauded all of our parents were supporting our students in such a hard time I also want to give a lot of credit to our staff and faculty who have address that's really difficult and challenging space I wish that I could offer you some definitive answers but we are working as we go and getting those update and then hopefully we can have them in person classes during summer and hopefully the fall will become a little more like the regular schedule that we usually offer but whenever we have that answer whenever we have that plan we will make sure to communicate that with all of our families okay okay so I do want to mention to you you know it has been a hard time for everyone I know that you and your families are undergoing many additional things on your child's Mental Health I know that there is a lot of anxiety in this face there's not a whole lot of Outlet in terms of social interaction so I applied whatever you are doing to try to make sure that your student is healthy academically physically mentally socially all of
